Make Hydroelectric Power

Introduction to make hydroelectric power:

Hydroelectricity: Hydro means water. The electricity that is generated from converting kinetic energy of water is called as hydroelectric energy.

The power thus generated is called as hydroelectric power.

Making (construction) of hydroelectric power plant:

1. Constructing the Dam or reservoir

2. Pen stocks

3. turbines

4. Generator house

5.Power Transmission

Explanation for making of hydroelectric power

Construction of reservoir or dam:

In order to use utilize the kinetic energy of water for a future the kinetic energy of water needs to convert to potential energy  by constructing a dam or reservoir across the river. The raise in the level of water in the dam indicates increasing in the potential head.

Pen stocks: Pen stocks are the pipes of larger diameter that will carry the stored water from the dam to strike on to the turbines. The kinetic energy of the water when falls on the turbines make the turbines to rotate at higher speeds.

Turbines:

Turbines having the blades. When the forced water from the pen stocks made to allow through fall on the blades of the turbine which makes the turbine to rotate.Hence Turbines converts kinetic energy of water to rotational energy creating a torque effect. The turbine shaft is directly connected to the rotor of the generator.

Generator house:

Generator House is the house of generators. The turbines are directly shafted to the rotors as the turbines rotates which makes the rotors between the magnetic poles in the generator to rotate which will generate the electricity according to Faraday's laws of electromagnetic induction.

Power transmission:

The generated power will be directly feed to the Step up transformers to step up the voltage for power transmission through feeders.Stepping up of voltage is meant for to meet the transmission losses.

Advantages and disadvantages of Hydroelectric power

Advantages:

The source of the energy  is free and renewable

Its pollution free and environmental friendly.

Dams built for hydro electric plants also help in flood control and irrigation purpose.

Disadvantages:

Installation cost is very high for constructing the dam

Dams built for large hydroelectric plants cause environmental and humanitarian problems
